ABA Grants Acquiescence to Concordia Law’s Ownership Transfer

Decision Smooths Concordia Law’s Transition with New Parent Institution

(BOISE, ID) — The American Bar Association (ABA) has acquiesced to the transfer of ownership of Concordia University School of Law to Concordia University, St. Paul, a decision that enables the law school to retain full ABA accreditation and smooths the ongoing transition between the law school and its new parent institution.

The decision was announced by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the ABA on Monday. The ABA is the federally approved organization responsible for setting and enforcing legal education standards and criteria for public and private law schools nationwide. Concordia Law earned ABA full accreditation in 2019, and in March submitted an application asking the ABA to review and grant acquiescence of an agreement that transferred ownership of the law school from Concordia University-Portland to Concordia University, St. Paul (CSP).

Concordia University-Portland founded the Boise-based law school more than a decade ago. But administrators at the Portland campus gave the law school permission to pursue another parent institution due to CU-Portland’s financial challenges. On February 20th, Concordia University, St. Paul announced its intentions to assume control of Concordia Law pending approval from the ABA and other higher education accreditation organizations.

“We are pleased with the ABA’s decision and its recognition that the quality legal education we are providing to our students will continue as we move forward in our new relationship with Concordia University, St. Paul,” said Interim Dean Latonia Haney Keith. “This decision ensures a seamless transition for students, prospective students, faculty and staff as the law school integrates with Concordia University, St. Paul and moves forward into the next stage of growth and success.” The ABA decision is a critical step towards the completion of the ownership transfer. Approval from The Higher Learning Commission, the regional accreditor for Concordia University, St. Paul, is pending and will be determined during its June meeting.

“This is exciting news for Concordia Law and an important step toward welcoming the faculty, staff, students and alumni into our broader Concordia University, St. Paul community,” said Dr. Eric LaMott, Provost and Chief Operating Officer for CSP. “Approval from the ABA is critical to moving the law school transfer forward and we look forward to completing the process of integrating the law school and together pursuing our shared missions and goals.”
