Following a national search, Concordia University-Portland appointed Elena Langan as the new dean of its Boise-based School of Law. Dean Langan will begin her new role in January 2017.

“Elena Langan brings the combined experience of teaching and working in the field of law, along with a strong commitment to student success and to Concordia’s mission of preparing future leaders,” said Concordia University-Portland President Charles Schlimpert. “We’re excited to welcome her to Concordia and to Boise.”

Langan currently serves as the associate dean for academic affairs and professor of law at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Previously she had served as the director of their first-year lawyering skills and values program and was appointed the law school’s interim dean during the 2013-14 academic year. Prior to joining NSU in 2007, she practiced law for 25 years, primarily in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University and a juris doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law.  She is an active member of the Florida Bar and was admitted to practice before the Maryland bar, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States District Courts for the District of Maryland and the Southern District of Florida.

“Concordia Law’s rigorous program of legal study – emphasizing community engagement, moral integrity, excellence in teaching, and pioneering scholarship, while also promoting entrepreneurship among its students – makes it unique among law schools,” said Langan. “I am excited to be joining such a forward-thinking law school that is intent on making a positive impact in Boise, the communities it serves, and the national legal academy.”

The appointment of Dean Langan follows the January announcement that Concordia Law’s founding dean, Cathy Silak, will take on broader Concordia University responsibilities as vice president for community engagement. In the meantime, Jilma Meneses, Concordia’s chief operating officer & chief general counsel, will serve as interim dean until Langan assumes her new responsibilities in January.
